What is a Bengal Cat? The Bengal is a hybrid breed of domestic cat resulting from crossing a domestic feline with an Asian Leopard cat (ALC).
Bengal cats are perfect for families yet have special markings of an "exotic" cat. The first recorded cross between the Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic was in the early 1960's with the first registered with the International Cat Assoc. being in 1983. The Asian Leopard cat is found in forests of Asia (southern), Bali, Borneo, China, India, Java, Korea, Philippines, Sumatra, and Taiwan. Expert swimmers, the ALC's can come in many different colors and patterns, which can be found in the Bengal Cat.
Bengal Cats have a fondness for heights, however they also love to cuddle and fetch. Their idea of a good day is when they can chase, climb, or just hunt around, investigating their surroundings. Water is a favorite of theirs, unlike most cats. They, also, love company and will have a tendency to want to be around you, being most lovable when they are tired.
A Bengal cat will have a short and soft coat which is either spotted or marble patterned. The Spots can bring the Bengal the look of a Leopard with it's variety of spots and the way the coats gleam with it's iridescent sheen. This is called "glitter", as each hair seems to shimmer with color.
Bengals can come in a variety of colors: bronze, copper, golden, mahogany with light brown to dark brown spots. Their eyes, like their coloring, can be anywhere from blue to aqua. What are called Silver Bengals, or "Snow" Bengals c have grey to white coloring with dark grey or black spots. Bengal cats have bellies that are white and the face marks have the usual tabby pattern.
Bengal Cats can grow to 6 to 15 pounds and are very muscular when healthy. They are very devoted to their families and confident which makes them a unique "family member".
But each Bengal Cat is like their human counterparts, individuals, interesting to have around, and wonderful company. The Bengal is a very energetic cat and will always find something to keep them entertained....and you.
